I can fully understand someone who is an amateur performer choking during the performance of the National Anthem at a major sporting event. If I was in charge of said event I would have a back up ready.
What I do not get is when a professional entertainer fails at this venue.

Yes, but what do you think of our national anthem in the first place? I find it rather jingoistic. I'd prefer 'America the Beautiful' over Francis Scott Key's poem set to a British drinking song any day
I like the Star Spangle Banner. I like the difficulty factor and the obscure subject matter (a nearly forgotten battle). Those things may not make for a good national anthem though.
