What ever did I do?

So I am reading a recommended article from a progressive blogger. Needless to say it was 'fantastic' (first definition).

In throwing out an example of what the US would do if Canada or Mexico started firing Hammas style missles at us, he concluded:

"Our appropriate response wouldn’t be to bomb the hell out of the nearest Canadian or Mexican city, but to collectively look into mirrors and earnestly ask ourselves, “What have we done wrong to incur their wrath?”

WTF??!! My mind just screen dumped. Seriously? How stupid is this?

Lets see you get mugged at gun point. Do you wonder “What have I done wrong to incur this wrath?”

You read about a rape in a local park. You ponder “What did that person do wrong to incur this wrath?”

A friend is hospitalized after an altercation with an abusive spouse. "What did they do to deserve such a beating?"

Your kid is continually bullied and beaten up at school. "What are they doing wrong?"

Blame the victim? I did hear some of this inane chatter after 9/11. Does anyone sane actually believe those 2974 people did something to deserve what happened?

I seriously hope this is not a progressive stance.

It's Star Trek mentality. It always drove me batty when a ship appeared and starts shooting at the gang and the bridge crew decides to have a meeting to discuss options. The bad guys would get in 5 or 6 shots and the E would get off a couple of radio messages "We are a SCIENCE vessel" and then maybe one wimpy torpedo.

I think we are sending the wrong messages.

Sooo.....Since you are attacking this progressive blogger, is he looking inward to ask himself what his flaw is to incur your wrath?? What a comfortable position for him to be in---he can practice free speech and conciliatory rhetoric, while hiding behind and protected by people who, thank God, don't share his opinion. Challenge him to show ONE historical example where that attitude ended well for a nation. Chamberlain comes to mind....

It's not a progressive stance, but if we got bombed, a comment like What have we done wrong to incur their wrath? seems—well, silly? Uninformed?

I don't think we asked ourselves that question on 9/11, even though I firmly believe our attack on Iraq was wrong because the Iraqis had nothing to do with the WTC.

Stella, I am glad to hear it is not a progressive stance.

If our response to WTC was to attack Iraq. That would be wrong. We did take out the Taliban.

Our working to depose Saddam was outlined in the fourteen points addressed to the UN.

FV, yeah I thought of Lord Chamberlain as well.

Stella---I have good news for you! There is more arctic sea ice this winter than any time since 1979, when Time and Newsweek were fearmongering the coming ice age, which they blamed on industrialization (acid rain and soot) To me at least, this is yet more proof that warming/cooling trends are cyclic and human infuence is minimal and regional.
